It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

Friday, June 26 is Take Your Dog to Work Day (TYDTWDay) – Pet Sitters International (PSI) created this phenomenon in 1999 to highlight the great companionship of dogs and to encourage their adoptions.  The event also invites employers to celebrate TYDTWDay while supporting their local pet community.

Even if your office is pet-friendly, here are a few tips to make sure that your dog is on his/her best behavior:

  • Dogs should be kept on a leash, unless in an office or cubicle or you can bring a pet gate to help keep your dog within your designated areas.
  • Try not to take it personally, but not everyone will want to interact with – or perhaps even see – your dog…so you’ll want to have pet-free areas, such as the kitchen, break room and the bath rooms.
  • To avoid unnecessary clean up duty, don’t forget to schedule mid-day walks and potty breaks.
  • Last but not least, you’ll want to have a backup plan – just in case your pet is uncomfortable in your work environment.

Last but not least, we can’t forget to put our ‘disaster’ hat on!  Just in case, you’ll want to know the emergency exits in your workplace to ensure that you and your pet can leave safely.. Does your office have quarterly/yearly disaster drills?  If not, you may want to talk with management to see if that can be added to your company’s disaster plan.
